My thoughts are as black as the victims of cops who use them as targets and always get off. Dark like the fact that real bad guys do fine, in this world the heroes get fucked every time. I’ve seen decent women give their love to villains, and I know what teenagers do when they’re bored. The summer is over as winter takes over I brace for the darkness we’re cursed to endure.

With a shoebox under his bed like a grave made for dolls without heads and dead pets without names.
As October persists his cruel hands make a fist and his eyes stay as still as the dead. With a mind bent and twisted, uninclined to resist impulses the rest of us dread. Dark like a crow’s wing, built slight but imposing, he smiles like a figurine. A demon in waiting, the devil’s own plaything, this child of Halloween.

for reasons unknown has since disowned its rules
Forgoing a night meant for fright, blood and gore
so that men can be children and women can be whores
The werewolves, ghosts, black cats, bats and hearses
have surrendered the night to slutty maids and nurses
Just as old fears of dark spirits made way
for a new fear of date rape, of fistfights, and AIDS
of razor blades placed so neatly in sweets
or ghastly ghosts forged from sad soiled sheets
As children we played, now as adults we seek
a night out with our demons every Halloween.
